Aviation museums

Imperial War Museum Duxford, England

In 1969 the Imperial War Museum obtained permission to use the historic, former RAF Duxford site for its collection of historic aircraft. In 1977 the Imperial War Museum, Cambridgeshire County Council and the Duxford Aviation Society purchased the runway at Duxford. The museum collections are housed in original hangars and later buildings: the landmark Airspace hangar tells the story of British aviation; Hangar 2 houses Duxford's collection of 'Flying Aircraft'; Hangar 3 houses the 'Air and Sea' collection; Hangar 4 houses the 'Battle of Britain Collection' and Hangar 5 shows 'Conservation in Action'. Brooklands Museum, England

Brooklands Museum, at Weybridge in Surrey, is located on part of the historic Brooklands circuit site. In 1907 Brooklands became home to the first purpose-built racing circuit in the country. As well as motoring, Brooklands became home to a number of aviation companies, including Vickers. In 1987 the Brooklands Museum Trust was established to care for the site. Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, England

The Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford was initially opened to the public on the first Sunday of the month between April and October in 1977. Later on 1 May 1979 the museum comprising three hangar buildings, officially known as the Aerospace Museum, was open for regular visits. On 21 June 1998 the museum was expanded to included additional galleries and exhibitions. A new visitors centre was opened in 1998. On 13 May 2002 the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre was opened, following its relocation from Cardington in Bedfordshire. In 2007 the RAF Museum's latest landmark buildng, the National Cold War Exhibition, was opened to the public. Visit the Royal Air Force Museum website

National Museum of Flight, Scotland

Located at East Fortune Airfield, Scotland's National Museum of Flight. The museum opened to the public on 7 July 1975 to house the growing collection of Scotland's Royal Museum. Hangar 1 contains the museum's collection of military aircraft, Hangar 2 contains the museum's civil aircraft collection, storage and restoration of aircraft is carried out in Hangar 3 and the museum's 'Concorde Experience' is housed in Hangar 4.
