The final production specification of the Tupolev Tu-144 evolved from the initial prototype design specification, much in the same way the Concorde development programme. The prototype design - designated the Tu-144 - was revised substantially before production resulting in production aircraft - the Tu-144s - that were larger and benefited from increased performance. From 1971 onward, Tupolev produced some ten Tu-144s aircraft. A second production specification - the Tu-144d - was introduced in 1974 integrating substantial revisions to the initial production specification. Six aircraft were built.
