Design

The design of Concorde (and her supersonic competitor the Tupolev Tu-144) were influenced by the different operating conditions required for supersonic flight. Compared to sub-sonic commercial aircraft, the aerodynamic shape of the SST is clearly different. Other features which were unique to the SST amongst civil commercial aircraft include the delta wing shape and droop nose.

This section of the website allows you to explorer those design elements that make Concorde so recognisable; the explorer allows you to explore over the different features of Concorde. By moving clicking your mouse cursor over an image of the aicraft you can access information boxes with details about that component of Concorde.

The Explorer open in a pop-up window (if your system is configured to block pop-up windows, please disable this option) and requires the a Javascript-enabled browser and the Macromedia Flash 8 Player plug-in (or above) installed. [All illustrations by Richard Coltman]
